About Us
Who we are… Our Past
Norwood Seniors Services Assoc. (NSSA – “Serving Seniors”) is a non-profit charitable organization which began in 1982 by a group of veterans from the Royal Canadian Legion – Norwood branch, who wanted to enhance the quality of life for low-income seniors living in subsidized housing in Edmonton. Their original vision was cultivated from a desire to build a subsidized apartment building near their Legion. Through the Association’s fundraising efforts, we have been able to provide the financial resources needed to fund services which support the independence and improve the quality of life for the low-income senior citizens who reside in the fourteen provincially owned apartment buildings managed by Vista Housing for Seniors.
What we do… Our Present
It is a sad reality that many of Alberta’s low income seniors struggle to remain as independent as possible along with ensuring their continued health, meeting their financial and dietary needs, along with having some social and recreational interaction with others. The sense of community we have been able to foster in these buildings by providing:
- Social and recreational equipment such as treadmills, shuffleboard tables, progression trainers, recumbent bicycles;
- Activities such as monthly birthday parties, transportation services, and trips and outings, and
- An annual Christmas celebration with a full Christmas dinner, especially for those who are alone for the holiday season. The holidays are often a time of depression for seniors. For many, feelings of sadness, loneliness and isolation are their holiday companions.
2012 marked our 30th anniversary in business. Over the years we have touched the lives of thousands of seniors.
Members of NSSA are annually elected to the Board of Directors of Vista Housing for Seniors to provide governance to the administration of fourteen provincially owned independent living apartment buildings in Edmonton housing low-income senior citizens.
Looking to the Future
With increasing inflationary pressures and changes to health services and housing options, more and more seniors will be in need of various forms of community supports, recreational activities and possibly financial assistance to maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life.
NSSA sees an opportunity to expand our resources by working together with various community agencies, funders and government representatives to fill the gaps and create thriving, vibrant, stable housing communities for seniors where needs of the individuals are being met on a daily basis.
